Disney Cruise line, and beyond.

So as you all know I’m in my last 3 weeks of my program here at Disney.

My roommate Kat and I have been trying to apply for the Disney cruise line but we haven’t heard anything positive back yet.

My current boss come from the cruise line and so has been helping me to get an inside referral. He has helped me update my resume and then send it off to the head of guest services shore side. He then advised me to apply online so they would get my application with my resume through their recruiter.

However the flaw in this plan was that there are currently no guest service positions available online for me to apply through. So we decided to apply for the Youth Activities Counsellor position which is being widely advertised currently.

Unfortunately we both heard back in 2 weeks that we had not made it to the second round. And that there are more “qualified” applicants. Which we both think is stupid. Kat for 1 has been working as a youth activities counsellor for years at various different camps in Australia.

I recently talked to my boss and he said that his contact was waiting for my application, when I told him there were none he said well we must touch base again soon. However I am deployed currently (perpetually it feels like), and so I don’t see him very often.

I am going to apply for a club host/hostess position but to be honest right now I can’t focus on much past being home and would really be so bad to try and find a job in NZ and live with some friends???

Kat and I have booked tickets to LEAKYCON!!!!!! You heard me the harry potter sensation hat gripping the nation is coming to Orlando Florida just as we finish our program. So we have decided to stay in Orlando for a few extra days ad rash at a friend’s place while we spend our life savings on harry potter fun.

We purchased General passes to the event which happens from July 30-August 3rd. it is being held at the Orange County event center. Tickets are $175 per person but we found a code which is “LEAKYFL” and it knocked $25 off the price.

Of course you may have heard there is an event scheduled for July 30th and it’s an exclusive night in the new harry potter park, free food, and only for leaky on guests. However it’s another $150 on top of the current ticket price and though I can’t really afford it, can I really afford to miss it????

Apart from money the other thing holding me back is that I’m still technically employed by Disney and I’m not sure if I’ll have that day off or not.

2 days to go

I’m losing my mind

Only 1 day of work left.

1 star wars character breakfast

1 Cher concert

And then …..

After almost 9 months with limited time off. Some months working six days a week with double shifts but mostly 5 days a week. Days off spent doing laundry and playing in the parks paying ridiculous prices for food inside the parks. I am so ready for a solid 10 days off ! In a row!

I love my job and the program and my experience over here at Disney but I am ready for something different and though I’m not really ready to go home yet ( going to stick out my last 3 months) I am really excited to leave the college program bubble for a week.

1 more 8 hour shift at all star music is all that stands between me and utter relaxation and as much food as I can fit inside my body! They are going to have to roll me off this ship !

Ps I have no idea what to wear for a Cher concert !!

So I’ve been terrible and haven’t updated like in forever so I’m going to give you a run down on my magical life in the second half of my international college program.

So January started with a new opportunity for me, I got special requested to work down at groups. Now for those who have been following you’ll know that I work at the All Star Resorts My status is technically “All Star Movies” but I work at all three themes through out the week. Groups is located between all star sports and all star music on the far back of the carpark. They pulled a whole bunch of us from the front desk and concierge to help with checkins for the cheer leading groups that we host while they have there competitions at ESPN wide world of sports.

They pulled me for on average 2 days a week not every week but when ever needful. I have really enjoyed this as it’s quite different from what I do as a lobby concierge. It’s really fast pace I usually start at 3pm and once I arrive I usually hop on a desk. There are 6 computers in this tiny little room, and usually like 20 people crammed I there trying to work as fast as possible to get everyone where they need to go. We have magic bands now so we have racks and racks out the back organized by resort and then by team and then alphabetically. So the basic run down is you hop on a computer log in and call a guest over, ask them if they are checking in their room or their entire team, it’s usually only coaches who can check in entire rooms, we require the guest to have photo ID and be over 18. However of they see under 18 we need a chaperone/coach or parent to be with them to check in.

Once you have the ID you look up the room, confirm the names of the people in the room and then send an expediter to get the magic bands while you grab a contact phone number and give out the room number and directions. That is the basic rule of groups, now multiply by 1500+ check ins daily.

I have also now been deployed several places Art of Animation and Port Orleans Riverside, I have also picked up shifts at Bay Lake Tower and Old Key West. I enjoy all star the most as it’s consistently busy and I never get to bored while in working.

so February was lots of fun Katherine’s family came over from Australia and we stayed at art of animation, we went on the quick service dining plan and it was AWESOME! The QSR gives you 2 quick meals and 1 snack per day and 1 refillable mug. The great thing about this is pretty much everything on the Starbucks menu is a snack, so the first day I got a venti, double chocolatey chip frappicino with a shot of coffee and extra caramel, it came up to almost $9 but was still considered a snack!!!! During the week we were able to cross off several food places from out lists ; sunshine seasons, landscape of flavours, gastons tavern to name a few.

We also had a character breakfast which was not included on the dining plan as it’s a table service meal. It was at 1900 park fare at The Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. We got to meet Mary Poppins, Alice, the Mad Hatter, tigger and if course Winnie The pooh.

We also made an appearance at beaches and cream in February as well. However only 3 of us went so we have yet to tackle the kitchen sink.

During March Emily and I went to the British celebration college program event and met Merida and Queen Elenor from brave as well as Bert and a penguin from Mary Poppins. I was also deployed to riverside in March.

Katherine and Dean and I also became Virgin sacrifices at a rocky horror picture show shadow cast performance and it was amazing we had so much rice thrown at us we were finish it in our pockets weeks later. Which as poor CP’s we considered hoarding it for food, but we decided that it was probably best not to.

April started out with the birthday celebration of the all stars where Minnie and Mickey dropped by gave us some cast gifts and took pictures with us. Christopher and I took some great photos in the photo booth and had lots of yummy food.

Julie, Christopher, Marie, Katherine and I all road tripped it out to Cocoa Beach for a day where I decorated Julie with shells and we all got ridiculously sunburnt. It was however a great day and it felt amazing to be in the ocean again after being away from one for so long.

There was several pin events where Christina and I visited and made some great trades, my Disney Winnie the Pooh pin collection is coming along fantastically. We also took Christopher and Katherine with us to the official Disney pin reading event at ESPN and witnessed the crazy that is Disney pin traders. I also bought the limited edition Elsa pin that was on offer that night.

Julie and I day tripped around the magic kingdom and watched the new parade, we ten went to Epcot and I tried the avocado margarita and Julie got a really spicy jalapeño margarita which was hilarious to watch her drink it, we also tried lots of little pieces of food from around the world showcase and flower and garden festival tents.

I was also fortunate enough to get to go on a back stage tour of space ship earth. It was amazing to get to see such an iconic ride up close and personal after hours. I got to take photos with some of the props.

Last but not least we come to May, it’s only 3 days in but already I have booked a cruise, 7 night Disney fantasy eastern carribean. It makes stops at st Maarten, the virgin islands and castaway cay Disney’s own private island. I’m going with 3 close friends and we have booked 2 staterooms with verandahs and because we are cast members we got an amazing deal. I’m so freaking excited it’s insane. Only 12 days to go !!!

This month I also have another pin trading event, a College Program summer splash party at typhoon lagoon, starwars breakfast and dinner, a Cher concert, all before my cruise!!!

Harry potter convention is in town ……

So cue the screaming, the fan girl-ing and passing out from excitedness.

So universal studios is doing a celebrating harry potter celebration this weekend, Friday it starts with a film tribute and then Saturday and Sunday have panels with some of the cast and an expo.

I convinced my friend Chris to go on Friday night even though he was insanely tired. However we couldn’t find where the film was so we spent far touch at honeydukes and the hogs head and then headed home for movies.

I unfortunately had to work on Saturday cue tears EVERYWHERE.

However, thank god there is a Sunday!! So early this morning (11am) Julie, Katherine and I set off for universal. I had donned my hearts shirt and my gryffindor scarf, as well as a pair of my terribly ripped jeans. And we were pumped!!! We had to stop for lunch though, so Julie and Kat got panda express and i had a burrito from moes. After which we located mikey. And then we headed off into the islands of adventure.

However they were very vague about the whole procedure and we didn’t actually know where anything was or how to go about finding out where it all was.

So after a quick trip around hogsmeade, were nothing useful was found. We decided to try out suck across the border in universal studios. Once we got there we found a rather useful sign.

And we learnt we were still in the wrong place. DAM IT !!!!! I need my harry potter fix! So we found a map looked up where toon lagoon auditorium was and headed over there as fast as we could for the 3:30pm Q&A session, the last of the weekend. We waited in line, and waited……. and waited……. and waited……. and waited…… we sang a very potter musical songs. We murmured the mysterious ticking noise, we made inappropriate jokes about most topics. And still we waited. And then….. oh my rowling, we were on our way inside. I’m still thanking her that we got in line when we did because we were in the very top corner of the top row of this giant auditorium.

I won’t lie i almost cried when everyone came out. Neville longbottom, luna lovegood, Fred and George weasley, answers seamus finnigan. It was so amazing  i was in the same room as them. The very people which i have grown up with as role models. I loved every moment of it. We even got our 30 seconds of fame on camera behind some one who was asking a question. We were TOTALLY mature and did not at all wave our hands and scream and talk aboutnwhether it would be worth getting dragged out by security if we flashed them. Those thought didn’t even cross our minds.

So the Q&A lasted about an hour. We then rode the hulk ride, and headed to universal studios again to find the expo. Once again we were in line. It even started to rain.

But i got this close to luna lovegood.

Once we got inside which took about half an hour, we discovered the sorting hat. My dreams came true, after another half hour wait it was my turn to be sorted.

GRYFFINDOR!!!!!! rang through the crowded room and i partied. Katherine and Julie also got sorted. Katherine got ravenclaw and Julie is a hufflepuff. When then purused the merchandise, got our pictures taken at the wanted wizards photo booth and i bought some harry potter stamps.

So diagon alley is opening summer 2014, i really hope it while I’m still her cos it would totally make my life.

Much love

Bahamas baby

So several months ago one of my routes suggested a cruise to the Bahamas so we all booked and paid for a 4 day cruise on royal carribean to the Bahamas. We booked the first week in December, and for months we all played the waiting game of whether or not our days off would get approved. But we did get our days approved or managed to get our shifts swapped in time. We then got all our paperwork signed by the vArious people so we could leave the country and come back in again.

So day 1 of the cruise:

We awoke around 9am finished packing and showered and basically we’re far too excited for one small apartment. There are 8 of us heading to the cruise so we had booked a taxi to pick us up at 11:30am. Waiting for that time took forever !!!!! We eventually hoped into the van with 8 various bags all packed to the brim with swimsuits and sunscreen.

We spent about an hour in the car on the way to the port it was lovely cost us $20 each way per person. Once we arrived at the port we argued about whether or not to take our own luggage on. We decided to cos none of us had enough to tip Anyone to carry it for us.

We then had fill in some information and go through customs/ immigration. Mean while we are stuffing our faces with Pringles that I had packed for the ride. Because of course we haven’t eaten yet, no food in the house and far too much excitement.

As we board the ship they announce that the staterooms are ready for boarding also. So we head down to our room, and then meet up with Courtney and Evie to explore and find some food.

We wound up in the windjammer buffet there was SO MUCH food it was insane we didn’t know where to start. Soup, salad, pasta, burgers, stews, rice, desserts, fruit, the list goes on and on. The windjammer buffet was at the back of the ship it had windows as walls, gorgeous 180 views of the ocean as you ate.
After lunch we decided to explore the ship, we found the casino, several bars and an adults only solarium complete with a bar, hot tubs and a bakery. So we decided to go for a swim. On our way down stairs i discovered a Starbucks on board!!! So i went halves with Kat in the drink deal $20 perday unlimited coffee, soda and non alcoholic drinks.

After a quick change and 2 Starbucks in hand we headed up to the solarium. We found an empty spa and evie, Kathmandu and myself started to feel like gods. One of the crew stopped by and asked us if we needed medication from the bar. We declined but love the tongue in cheek of the waiter.

The evening drifted by slowly, the ship left port and things got decidedly rocky out on the ocean. We all felt decidedly drunk all night even though no alcohol did we consume. Kat and i discovered a vertical bungy jump which we both tried out. It was a surreal feeling bei.ng on the tail end of a large moving ship and jumping into the air. I found it very hard to go straight up and down and ended up mostly jumping backwards and forwards instead. While small children laughed at me.
I found it hard to sleep that night. We had requested 2 beds but they gave us a king instead, also the boat rocked in such an odd way i couldn’t sleep well at all.

Day Two

Day two dawned early and brightly. The captain woke us, at the god awful hour of 7/8am to inform us that we had arrived just off the coast of their private island Cococay. The previous day kat and i had booked in snorkelling for 22 each. So we got up and sort out coffee and breakfast. Once again we ended up in the windjammer cafe. The breakfast spread was amazing, an omelettes station, eggs, breaks, fruit, meats, pancakes, waffles, desserts, fresh orange juice. Along with alcoholic beverages and everything else you could eat in life. Over breakfast ( once again minus courtney who was still sleeping) we made out plans for the day. Which basically consisted of go to the island, do some snorkelling, eat, explore, buy some useless items :).

After breakfast we headed back to our rooms to getready/wake and feed courtney. We then went to deck 2 and discovered a massive line. We joined the line it took us about half hour to get on a Boat from the boat so we get to Cococay. Once on solid ground we headed straight for snorkelling. Evie and courtney decided to join us. We got taken through our safety instructions by a south African. We then chose some deck chairs claimed them as our own And left all our crap all over them. We ventured into the water……… HOLY DAM IT WAS COLD!! months of living in Florida when the non heated pools at vista way felt like bathes had ruined us. It honestly took us like 2 minutes to ease our way into the water. But once we were in it was gorgeous. We snorkelled around pointing out fish and what not. Surprisingly enough it was the Australians who had never been snorkelling before. We swam out to a sunken plane where we met up with the other 4 we were travelling with. We had a great time taking underwater pictures and just lazying the day away.

Eventually hunger called us back to the beach where we discovered a bbq going in full force. We tracked down Kate’s and joined a line. Ribs, chicken, corn, hot dogs. Salads and desserts everything you wanted/needed after a day at the beach. It was glorious (all we did was eat on this cruise) we then checked out the markets. It was your typical things, everything said Bahamas and it was tshirts, dresses and weird Nik nacks. I didn’t buy anything, i didn’t see anything liked enough unfortunately.

Kat and i headed back to the ship after a bit, just to get out of the sun it wasn’t hot and sunny out. Once back in the cabin i discovered i come back either some odd tan lines. Before heading in t the water i had asked for some screen to be sprayed on my back. I now had one line across the middle of my back and a splotch with some drip marks down one shoulder. I thought this was a hilarious souvenir. Forgetting back to the ship kat and i participated in some harry potter trivia where we KICKED ASS! And won a pen each. We then heard a rumour of free champagne and so attended an art auction, which was very entertaining, even though we did big occasionally we did not ( thankfully) win anything.

We booked a table for 4 in the my fair lady dining room for 8.30. As there was several shows we wanted to see, in the ships theater. It turned out to be a fancy dress evening. We got our photos taken with the captain.

And free champagne just before going into dinner. The my fair lady dining room was amazing. The menu was extensive and there was a different one each night. You got an appetizer, a main and a dessert. I had the shrimp cocktail, can’t remember my main and then lemon meriengue pie and a chocolate dessert i also had a coffee. We rolled our selves up to the theater after dinner, so muchfood in our bellies. We watched the stand up comic. We wandered around the ship for ages and just relaxed.

Day Three

After finally getting some sleep we slept in till 10am on day three. We had docked at the Bahamas. At the island of nassau. After a breakfast in the windjammer. We headed off the boat, passports and spending money in tow. Once on the docks we grabbed some maps and decided not to take a taxi and walk to the shopping area. After walking for an hour we decided it was still far away and we hadn’t gotten as far as we had hopped. So we hailed a taxi and got him to take us to the shopping district just over the bridge. We got out at a strip of shops, after looking at bathing suits and walking around d we discovered a shopping courtyArd. With shops like pandora, etc,. I found a Ben and jerrys and gitva mango smoothie. Kat found a star bucks it was another stunningly hot day and we were all thirsty.

However as we were exploring the giant hotel at the end of the courtyard, my body suddenly decided that horizontal was more appealing send from one step too the next i was suddenly on the ground in a lot of pain. I had sprained my ankle :(. This gave everyone a hell of a fright and evie took off to get ice. After about 10 mins on the ground with ice i eventually felt better enough to get back to the road to get a taxi back to the ship. Granted it took me a long time to get there. Back on board the couldn’t do anything for me. So i spent lot of time with my foot up drinking coffee and eating. So at the end of day 3 i still hadn’t bought any souvenirs. We did however par take in happy hour. I had a couple of delicious concoctions which left me feeling rather happy. Kat went to have a nap and i found a library, where i read for several hours.

We ate at my fair lady again for dinner. I had a garlic soup as an appetizer, roast duck as a main and then a chocolate mousse for dessert and a glass of wine. We also had a delicious shot with dinner as well. Good times all around. After dinner there was a love and marriage game show which we attended and i purchased an alcoholic beverage because it had a flashy glass that kat wanted. The waiter told me to take a drink and he would add some love to it for me. By the end it was very strong and made for a wonderful night.

Day Four

This was our last day on the cruise ship. It was our day at sea. We slept late, and wandered around the ship all day. We participated in many raffles but didn’t win anything. We ate constantly and had a glorious time. We attended a napkin folding seminar. Some more trivia, and lazed by the pool for the rest of the day. That night at dinner all of the kitchen cast members and waiters sang .us a song and all kinetic up for us on the giant staircase so we could applaud them and thank them for the amazing job that day.

For dinner we feasted on fresh bread as we had every night so far and tried all of the delicious things they brought us. Things like escargoe, lobster bisque, etc etc.

This cruise was absolutely amazing and a complete eye opener. I really want to go on another cruise because i feel like i know now what to expect and what to do. I feel that we missed out on lot because we didn’t know what was going to happen or what to expect.

Sorry it took me so , ongoing to update i just kept forgetting.
Love nutmeggle

Vista way

So I have been living in vista way for over a month. And I think you guys could do with some home truths in the making of your decision for which housing complex to choose.

I met a few people who had done the Disney college program before and they advised me that Chatham square is THE apartment block to live in. However when I got the dorms email I believe I must have missed a check box that indicated preference to apartment block or number of people. Because when I arrived I discovered I had been placed in vista way. Initially this was a disappointment however I am ever a positive person so I refused to allow it to ruin the start of my Disney experience.

So it’s been over a month and a half since all six of us moved in together. Vista way is actually an awesome place to live, there is always people around and things to do. The rent is the cheapest out of all the apartment blocks. It does have its Down falls it has a bad reputation and the kitchens are tiny and the Apartments are old and crappy. But I enjoy living here and I enjoy the extra $6 a week in my paycheck that I save on rent. It is really no different than a student flat.

There is a dollar store, a drive through Starbucks, dunkin donuts, Wendy’s, chick fil a, and Walgreens just next door which is awesome. Many people also go on party buses on Thursdays but I have heard terrible things so I am afraid to venture out on them. Generally it is under 21 territory.

We have apartment inspections from 3rd of October till 14th of October, which sucks so for 11 days we have to keep the apartment spotless, no dishes on the bench, no rubbish in the bin, etc blergh !!!!!!

There are some who like to believe that their program is better because they live in a ‘newer’ complex, but you just have to have a think and see that does it really matter where your are living? if it doesnt leak or cause any other issues then what is the problem?

Work costume and bedroom

Life over here is both exactly what I expected and completely different at the same time. I am having a blast, meeting new people, playing in the parks and enjoying working. I am spendign lots of time at Disney university at the moment, as i have completed my stint as front desk at the All Star Resorts. I am now in training for Lobby Concierge, this involves a 3 day course at Disney University and then 5 days of on the job training, followed by another day at D.U. for cast apps training and then a transportation tour. After all that i will be officially trained and on my own as a concierge at the all star resorts. this means i have the chance to realise a dream of mine which is to work at as many of the resorts as possible.

i also found out (though im not sure if it applies to ICP’s) that after 6 months you can request a location change. so we shall see, this has its pros and cons. The All Star’s are a value resort and because of this it is pretty laid back in how posh you have to be. it is not a Disneys Vacation Club resort, nor does it have to maintain any diamond awards. this means i can just focus on the guests rather than whether or not i handed the guest everything in the right order e.t.c. so im thinking maybe ill just pick up shifts at other resorts instead of moving 🙂
