The waiting game

So with everything I choose to do in my life I love to play the waiting game. This is not true. I am the most impatient person I know. However I decided a long time ago that I wanted to live the life I wanted. I wanted to travel the world and be paid for it. I want to live for the experiences and enjoy life to the fullest.

So I have constantly found ways to reach these goals and fulfil my wanderlust and lack of money.

So if you guys have been following me for a little while you’ll know that since I finished my Disney International College Program I have been trying to get on to the Disney Cruise Line. Last time we talked I was mid-way through my application process.

I have filled in the application, which was pretty straight forward … Upload resume….. Now type out resume in the following screens. I found having a reference from within Disney was really beneficial here, even an old manager.

I had a phone interview which lasted around an hour – hour and a half. In which my recruiter a lovely lady by the name of Jan talked to me about my job, my resume, my time at Disney, why I felt I was right for the team, working on a cruise ship and of course my next steps. After the interview I had to get a medical check-up which consisted of lots of blood work and immunisation history as well as an eye test and a hearing test. To start with I did have some trouble with this as I was not provided the information for the medical tests until I had already had the meeting with my doctor. This was a very expensive part of the application. This cost me $25o for the first appointment and blood work. After I was provided the correct paperwork I had to get more blood tests done which was an extra $70. I then had to try and track down immunisation records and ended up having another blood test to see if I was immune to chicken pox. Turns out I am, I believe I was immunised as a child but there were no records of it. I also had to go for a hearing test which was slated to cost another $80. Luckily enough it was free in the end.

I also had more information to fill in online, passports, flight availability, marital status etc.

During all this run around I had also booked my visa appointment at the only consulate in New Zealand which is in Auckland. I did however go on the wrong day the first time and felt like a complete dick. So I went back on the right day. Dressed up all professionally I took;

  • Both my passports,
  • My receipts of the interview
  • Confirmation of the DS-160
  • Letter of employment
  • American Passport photo (5cmx5cm)

Once I waited in line and it was finally my turn I handed all the paper work and my New Zealand passport over and went to sit until they called me for my interview. When they called me up to the second window, they asked

  • What I was applying for? A c1/d visa
  • Why I was applying for this? Because I had a job with Disney on the cruise line
  • What had I done before? Worked as a concierge for Walt Disney world.

The interviewer then told me that I should know what I was doing and advised me that my visa had been accepted and that I would receive my passport by courier within the next week. I was over the moon!!! I did receive my passport 2 days later and I found that my visa was valid for 5 years!!!!

So I uploaded a copy of the visa to the documents website, I am now just waiting on the last of my medical records to be finalised.

So I spent the better part of a week going stir crazy waiting for that call to say they wanted me right now!! I even sent a message to one of the Disney reps to see what my hire status was, and she replied that they would do their best to get me a job by December. DECEMBER!!! Omg I was momentarily devastated. I didn’t want to wait that long. I was going crazy with nothing to do at home, I have had no luck in finding a part time job since I’ve been back.


Finally on September 30th I received an email with the news id been waiting for!



I of course accepted straight away.

I then received a second email.

And now I’m just waiting on confirmation of flights.

Disney Cruise line, and beyond.

So as you all know I’m in my last 3 weeks of my program here at Disney. 

My roommate Kat and I have been trying to apply for the Disney cruise line but we haven’t heard anything positive back yet.

My current boss come from the cruise line and so has been helping me to get an inside referral. He has helped me update my resume and then send it off to the head of guest services shore side. He then advised me to apply online so they would get my application with my resume through their recruiter. 

However the flaw in this plan was that there are currently no guest service positions available online for me to apply through. So we decided to apply for the Youth Activities Counsellor position which is being widely advertised currently. 

Unfortunately we both heard back in 2 weeks that we had not made it to the second round. And that there are more “qualified” applicants. Which we both think is stupid. Kat for 1 has been working as a youth activities counsellor for years at various different camps in Australia. 

I recently talked to my boss and he said that his contact was waiting for my application, when I told him there were none he said well we must touch base again soon. However I am deployed currently (perpetually it feels like), and so I don’t see him very often. 

I am going to apply for a club host/hostess position but to be honest right now I can’t focus on much past being home and would really be so bad to try and find a job in NZ and live with some friends???


Kat and I have booked tickets to LEAKYCON!!!!!! You heard me the harry potter sensation hat gripping the nation is coming to Orlando Florida just as we finish our program. So we have decided to stay in Orlando for a few extra days ad rash at a friend’s place while we spend our life savings on harry potter fun. 

We purchased General passes to the event which happens from July 30-August 3rd. it is being held at the Orange County event center. Tickets are $175 per person but we found a code which is “LEAKYFL” and it knocked $25 off the price. 

Of course you may have heard there is an event scheduled for July 30th and it’s an exclusive night in the new harry potter park, free food, and only for leaky on guests. However it’s another $150 on top of the current ticket price and though I can’t really afford it, can I really afford to miss it????

Apart from money the other thing holding me back is that I’m still technically employed by Disney and I’m not sure if I’ll have that day off or not.



Less than a month to go.

So it is now less than 1 month till i leave New Zealand for the bright city lights of the United States of America.

Whenever i really stop and think about the fact that in 25 or less days i will be travelling on my own to San Francisco, and then on to sunny Lake Bunea Vista, Florida and Disney world. Where i will spend then next 12 months working for THE mouse. I admit i freak out,…… like a whole lot!!!

It’s really nice now everyone at work knows I’m going, i get .ro talk about Disney all the time again which is great because that is exactly what i want to do anyway 🙂

I have just received my Disney look email, which bassicly provided links too all the Disney look rules and regulations.

I have ticked off everything on my Disney checklist so far:
New passport
Background check
Visa paperwork
Visa interview
Travel plans and associated accommodations etc
Medical insurance
Applying for classes (Max 2)
Letting Disney know my arrival time and receiving my check in time and location .

Speaking of which they have changed my checking location, normally you would check into vista way welcome centre, but they have asked me to check in at the commons instead. Quite a few/ if not all the Australia/New Zealand international arrivals on August 5th have been changed to this new location.

Still to check off:
Housing preferences
Go shopping for last minute items
Throw a leaving dinner / Party

Hey all

So I resigned from my receptionist role this week. I did this because it is only 35 days till i leave for the states.

This is probably the most stressed I have been at any point during this process. this was probably because I was afraid they wouldn’t let me stay for the remaining month, and I also have a personal fear/hate of letting people down no matter who they are.

However on Wednesday I resigned and my boss was very understanding and everyone at work is excited for me 🙂

This has released a fair amount of the stress i had put my self under :).

I’m slowly but surely checking everything off my list;

flights: check – Flight #1:leaving Auckland 7:15pm August 1st arrive San Francisco August 1st Midday.
Flight #2: leaving San Francisco August 4th 10:30pm via chicago arrive Orlando 9:30am.

Visa: Check

medical insurance: check – Policy 2A $1925.00

resignation: Check – Completed 26/06/2013, my last day will be July 26th.

packing: not yet but in the process of acquiring everything i need.

registered for classes: check – Monday’s (8.30am – 1pm) cast exploration & human resources and Exploring guest service.

Need to do:

Organise a leaving dinner/party

Go shopping/make a shopping list (next payday July 15th)


Look at travel insurance

Look at things to do in San Francisco

Complete the housing DORMS (opens 10 days before check in )



Applying and the Interview


This blog is going to be about applying for the IDCP. Woot..

So I first heard about this opportunity at my university in my first year of study.

 Back ground information:

I am 22 years old and I live in New Zealand. I studied at Otago University at the bottom of the South Island. I started out studying a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Studies with a minor in Hospitality. I then changed in my second year to a Bachelor of Commerce with Honours in Tourism. Then in my third year I dropped the honours course as I just wanted to go and travel and not spend 4 years at university.

 All these changes sure were fun, changing from arts to commerce meant I now got to do all the “fun” math papers I had been avoiding. *sigh*

 But I graduated in 2012 with my Bachelor of Commerce and couldn’t be happier. (Well sort of)

Back to the topic at hand:

So I discovered the IDCP in 2010 through my tourism department at university. It sounded fairly easy to get into and sounded like it encompassed all sorts of awesomeness.

The requirements are pretty easy:

To qualify candidates must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age

  • Be a citizen of Australia, New Zealand and/or the United States of America.

  • Be a current student at an accredited post-secondary university or at a tertiary-level accredited educational (TAFE)/Polytechnic institution and have completed at the first full year of study prior to application.Recent graduates of a university or TAFE/Polytechnic may also apply but must start work at Walt Disney World Resort within 12 months of their graduation date.

    •  Please note you may not defer the semester prior to your arrival
  • Per Visa regulations, you may not study via correspondence

The requirements vary depending on your home country and whether they recruit there.

So I decided to wait until I had graduated or almost graduated to apply as I love to travel and probably wouldn’t have come home again to finish my degree.

So during my three years of uni I became pretty obsessed with the program. I discovered that Jeni (our Australia/New Zealand recruiter) visited my university twice a year and also occasionally guest lectured while she was around. She also did 2 presentations per visit.

Suffice it to say I got to know Jeni really well as I went to every presentation and crashed every lecture she gave.

By the time I applied, she was as excited as I was that I was finally applying. 😛

So during my third and final year of uni, around September my turn finally arrived. I filled in the online application (except for the work history section as it has a well known glitch) printed it off and signed it. I also filled in a sheet with my choices for roles, signified whether I wanted a 6 month or a 12 month role, got a copy of my passport, and filled in my Resume and a cover letter.

I dyed my hair brown ( which didn’t work properly, I have so many colour running through my hair that it was more purple than brown L)  took out all my ear piercings except for the 2 designated by the Disney look and organised an appointment time.


You must be interviewed for this program either in person or via Skype.

I was nervous about this for the whole year before I applied.

Jeni was lovely she was just as excited as I was to be applying.

She asked me basic things like what my favourite Disney movie was what hometown I would like on my name badge. However since I had gotten to known Jeni over the years she didn’t ask me as many things as she did to a few others.

She also asked what my preferred choice would be and the length of the program I would like as well.

At the end of my interview she told me not to stress and that I would hear back within 2 weeks.

And so the waiting began…..

  • Be friendly, Open and Honest
  • Research the Disney look and dress as if it’s for a job interview (which it is)
  • Be as flexible as possible when choosing roles, the more you pick the more they can offer you, (they cannot offer you a role which you haven’t selected)
  • Make sure you have all your paper work, and be 15mins early to your appointment.

All in all I highly recommend that you apply for this opportunity, so far it has been the best experience and I haven’t even gotten there yet J
